Your sandpaper choice above P800??

When you're sanding above P800 (~CAMI 400), what's your favorite sandpaper? I use Abranet to P400, and some foam-backed stuff from Vince for 600 & 800, but not sure where to go from there. Learned yesterday, looking at some exotic-wood boxes, that it can make a difference going up from P800. From what I've read, the black wet/dry paper loads very fast.

Traditional wet or dry is made for metal and the water slurry helps keep is less loaded.
Abranet in disks is available to 1000. After that, Abralon is foam backed and comes in (180, 360,500)1000,2000,3000,4000
but what matters is what the final finish is. If it is buffed, waxed, using an oil, film finish like lacquer, or bare, I would treat each a bit differently in what grit I would sand to. Different woods as well.

if you would like some samples, let me know

Thanks, Steve, I hadn't seen the Abranet over P600, I'll check out the disks (I have lots of disks in the lower grits from my flat-wood days). Will look into the Abralon also.

I buy the finer grits from thesandingglove.com cuts very clean and lasts amazingly long. I can't remember the brand but Bruce will be glad to tell you what he has.

Abranet in rolls, only goes to 400 and that in 2 3/4"and I think 4" wide. Woodcraft does have an exclusive on 1" wide.
outside of that, it is disks

I don't use enough right now to do rolls. My last order was for 2.75" x 8" sheets from Supergrit.com I'm sure production turners can't take the time to cut little pieces out, but that's OK for me. Love how long the stuff lasts!

I use brown grocery bags when I want to go REAL high I believe they are equivalent to about 1200.

Now there is an idea I've never heard before. Maybe craft paper would be about the same.....?

I looked. I bought the Norton in grits up to 1500. Rarely use beyond 600 but I do use 600 quite a bit. He has a wide selection to choose from. http://thesandingglove.com/Woodworking-Abrasive-Sheets.asp

Like John, I almost never go above 600g for sandpaper, and I'm using the Finkat paper from Japan these days. Often, I'm using 0000 steel wool above that.....used wet with the danish oil.

I hear the brown paper bag and the buff with shavings thing all the time. It does work to some degree but you really don't know what your getting. I prefer to step through the grits knowing that I'm getting rid of the previous scratches. I used to do the shavings thing long before I knew what a really well sanded piece looks like. I'll stick with sandpaper and buffing compounds.

I powersand through 800 and pretty much always follow up with a 0000 synthetic steel wool. The 0000 really takes it a step further with minimal effort. I bump up the speed a little from slow power sanding, but too fast and it melts. One piece lasts a long time.

On shavings, I've tried it a bit. You need to be careful around sharper edges on rim because they tend to burn a little dark line on edges at medium higher speeds. I'm not sold on shavings.

About 20 years ago I took a few carving classes from a Tlingit elder here in Alaska. His final sand on some of his masks was dog shark skin, which has been used for thousands of years.

Are we talking P800? These days, it seems a good idea to specify, though it could be that FEPA is all we turners use, I dunno. "Dog shark skin" -- now that is cool!

Yes, Jamie. P800 if I've been paying attention. I mostly use the greenflex discs from Vince. So far I haven't found a good source for the 0000 synthetic steel wool, just Amazon. But each piece splits into 3, and each third of a piece is good for 10-20 average sized bowls.

I'm not an expert by any means in sanding (understatement of the year) but I also think that sanding through intermediary grits has led to a better finish...ie, not going 80, 120, 180, etc... (Though I thankfully rarely start at 80 anymore) but 80, 100, 120, 150, 180, 240, 320, 400, 600, 800. Yes I balked at that for a while, but I think it's faster in the end and leads to a better finish. Convinced by Vince. He urged me to try it, and I haven't gone back.

well calling me an old frugal woodturner may be accurate, it is no tale and it works beautifully. I would not have taken the time to pass it on, if I had no experience with it. We old people with 30 yrs experience do know a thing or two.

Last year at SWAT I was keeping Steve busy measuring off ten foot lengths of Abranet while holding up a crowd of customers. I thought that I bought grits higher than 400, but I might be mistaken. I do have Abranet up to 1000, but don't use it very often ... it might be Abranet disks that are the higher grits. I've never tried Abralon, but other people have told me that they really like it.

I normally don't sand bare wood to a higher grit than P400 unless I will be leaving the wood bare which I occasionally do with especially hard wood like mesquite that takes a nice shine without applying a finish. When I go to high grits, I generally use Micromesh all the way up to 12,000 grit. I also use the Micromesh when I want a high gloss lacquer finish.

I've always preferred hand sanding off the lathe for anything over 150 grit, but I recently injured my right shoulder to the point that I can barely use a turning tool, so I guess that power sanding is now in my future. I assumed that I was still invincible and couldn't get repetitive motion injuries. Dang, this getting old and wearing out. :(

Sorry to hear about the shoulder, Bill! "Been there, done that" as they say. What repetitive motion caused it?? I've had RMIs in hands and wrists, but not shoulder -- that was due to a horse who had a panic attack, knocked me down and fell on top of me.

A horse falling on top of you doesn't sound too good. I've had a lot of arthritis in my shoulder for a long time and been aggravating it with things like hand sanding and removing a couple thousand corroded deck screws late last year. A few months ago I had a serious fall and probably got a pretty good jolt to the shoulder when I hit the ground. A few weeks ago I grabbed for a falling tool and that was the coup de grace that finished tearing some tendons. So, I guess that it was an accumulation of things and not letting injuries properly heal before causing even more injuries. The orthopedic surgeon said that I am definitely a candidate for surgery, but I am trying to postpone it for a while if I can. He gave me a shot in the shoulder that helped ease the pain a bit.

I did the surgery thing, though it may not have been as extensive as what you're headed for. The good news was, I got my range of motion and strength back. The bad news was, it gave me a whole new "Ten" on my pain scale. It was worth it. Important to note: physical therapy/rehab is very, very important!

As I said before, I don't doubt it has its use -- just picking on the "1200" thing. BTW, pay no attention to my profile picture, I have twice as many years behind me than I do ahead of me, though very few turning.:D I can only dream of becoming a half-way decent turner before I "turn" 70.

Yep. I don't want to have a bad outcome because of not following the doctors orders. I know about the pain. I felt like my arm had been ripped out of the socket. It ranked right up there with the back pain I had about twenty five years ago that caused me to pass out. When I came to, my wife asked why I was lying on the floor and said that I would be much more comfortable if I would go lie on the bed instead. Great idea, dear, I wonder why I didn't think of it. I didn't actually say it ... I'm not that dumb.

Diagnostically I Just had vertebral articular facets injected 2 days ago to see if trochanteric (outer part of hip joint-not the joint itself) pains were from spine or arthritic hips. I was better right away. Things are looking up as there is some conservative treatment. "Aging isn't for sissies!!!" :)Gretch

Ya.......keeping one up on "old man time" takes more than just taking what comes!

I started a regular exercise program (again!) on 1/1/04 that I've been dedicated to since then. I think it's helping, but does nothing for greying hair and wrinkles!

Minimum of 2 1/2hrs solid cardio with about 1/2hr of weights per week. More on some weeks, but that's the minimum.

I'm not sure what's best, but I'm using a heart-rate monitor, and don't allow myself to go over 130 beats per minute. At that point, I stop and go on to something else.

Wish you all long life........a quality life. ;)

Quite common for hip pain to refer from a spine problem, glad your doc tried the empirical approach. I spent two years sleeping awkwardly due to hip pain, went to a spine specialist, and he did the same for me -- injection in SI joint, near-instantaneous relief. He told me that having extreme difficulty turning over while lying down was a prime indicator of SI inflammation. Sciatic nerve pressure can cause hip pain two, but not necessarily the problem turning over. Oh, joy, isn't it fun?

Good for you, Odie, I am impressed. "Live long and prosper"! Since I'm no longer riding, I need to get going on dedicated exercise. The Regence Medicare supplement plan comes with a membership to "Silver Sneakers";), which one of our local gyms takes part in. Free use of machines between noon and 6pm. Someday....soon.....really!

Now, if I can just figger out how to do a "mind meld".....Heh,heh,heh........

I just got back from my routine......40 minutes today.

Thanks Jamie.......I started accumulating exercise equipment when I made the new year's resolution to get fit again. Over the years, I've belonged to several health clubs, and it never seemed to work out. It's a lot easier to stay with it, when you work out in your own home. If you have a Play It Again Sports in your area, take a look there. I bought nearly all my equipment there, at about 25-50% of original cost.

If your husband, or your kids want to partner with you......that's a big help too. :D My son works out with me a couple times a week.

Good luck, dear lady.........:D

Silver Sneakers indeed! We geezers need to band together and smite them with our walkers and canes.

When did you get the message? Was it when you hit "Submit Reply"? I started to emulate what you did, but didn't hit the reply button. His images are attached to the post and not embedded within the text so they didn't appear within the quote. I need to look at the "UserCP" (user control panel) to see if you have an option to turn off images in quoted text.

"Manage Attachments" is for managing your:rolleyes: attachments. You can't manage other members attachments. However, it's possible that you may have uncovered a glitch in the software.

I got a note from Steve, he's working on it (I have to try again and see what happens). The reason I tried "Manage Attachments was because the photos were (supposedly) trying to show up in my post. It's never happened before.

An actual sanding post: I'm trying to use up my W/D black high-grit paper, only regret is that it loads really fast. So I took a loaded-up strip and wiped it on a piece of rubber drawer liner -- wow, cleaned it right off!

Yes, smileys are images too. The software is too dumb to make a distinction between tiny images and larges ones ... it just counts the total number of images.

You could use really big smileys like this except that you can't really place them inline like the built in smileys:

smiley_0248_easy-gbpics.de.jpg

You can also use emojis like this . They are text characters so they don't count as images. Here's how to do it with a desktop computer:

Using Emoji on Desktops

Windows 10

  1. In Desktop mode, right-click the Taskbar
  2. Click to check the option that says "Show touch keyboard button"
A new icon will appear in the taskbar (lower right hand corner of the screen near the time) that looks like a keyboard. Click the keyboard icon to open the onscreen keyboard, you can then click the smiley face to open the emojis.

Windows 8

To access emoji in Windows, you have to perform a one-time setup first.

  1. In Desktop mode, right-click the Taskbar
  2. Select "Toolbars"
  3. Select "Touch Keyboard"

A new icon will appear in the System Tray (lower right corner of your screen) that looks like a keyboard.
After that, when you want to type an emoji, just click on that icon and an onscreen keyboard will appear. Click the smiley face next to the space bar, and the alphanumeric keyboard will change to an emoji keyboard.

Windows 7 and below

Emoji are not built-in to older versions of Windows, but you can use them manually by copying and pasting them into your text:

  1. go to www.getemoji.com
  2. select an emoji as you would do with regular text and copy it
  3. paste it into your content

Traditional wet or dry is really designed to be used wet. If it is going to be used wet, soak it in water for 30 minutes first since the backing is brittle otherwise. But is is still meant to be used on metal
