Quite quiet on the turning front

I have been very quiet when it comes to showing any turning this is due to a small delivery of logs just before Christmas which I started to convert. These consisted of Oak, Ash and Field Maple.
I managed to cut into slabs just before the holidays but had to store some outside under a tarp so they needed to be cut into rounds and sealed so that everything would fit in the wood store

At last finished all of the wood that was outside under a tarp so now all sealed under cover and in stick. Started with 128 pieces cut from the logs then once cut into rounds and hollow form blanks gives me a good amount to turn and that is after I gave 18 pieces away this now gives me a total of 102 bowl blanks and without getting on my knees to count the hollow form blanks a rough guess of 40 to 50. Some I will eventually rough turn to speed up drying. I am expecting some losses but with that amount should still give me a good amount.

Luckily I have a load of others that I have had drying for a number of years which will give me plenty to get on with as all of them are dated so I know what order to use them in.

How many people also cut and store in this fashion or do you leave it in log or plank form until nearer the time of needing it.

The picture show when I was 80% through the work the shelf below the round is part of last years harvest and the bottom is the hollow form blanks from this batch and the pieces standing from various years which I have left in logs as they are small diameters. The smallest round blank on the upper shelf is 4" diameter and the largest of this lot is 16"diameter

This is just one of my stores

I've also been quite quiet on the turning front mostly because of recovering from surgeries last year. I have my supply of mesquite stored outdoors fully exposed to the weather. I keep my less durable wood like box elder, walnut, and figured maple in my air conditioned garage. I need to get busy turning because I probably have about two or three years worth of wood.

I don't do many bowls so I tend to cut it up into blanks that can be used for either or I make large spindle stock out of it.

My wood stash is outside. I used some 4 x 4 fro sawmill that has the pith in them to store the hf blanks up off the ground. The sawmill will sell them for fence posts but they are negotiable if they are building up. Mostly the wood pile is Bradford pear in hf blanks & mesquite in short log form from a Texas trip some time ago. Also have 1 hf blank of camphor on front porch with a log on top.....no anchorsealed. Really need to get back to turning only excuse is trouble with left hand.

Panning for Montana gold, with Betsy, the mule!
I've been buying wood faster than I can turn it for many years. My best guess is I have around 500 bowl blanks in storage.......probably about 75% of which are roughed and seasoned bowls. The rest are squares or rounds with minimum MC. I've always roughed and seasoned bowl blanks with MC over about 14% MC, or more.

My best guess would be that I have between 400 - 500 roughed out bowl blanks, fully seasoned and ready to final turn From 10” up to 23” diameter, then I have approx. 100 plus platter blanks (all of them figured Maple) about 30 % of them with exceptional figure. Then another100 or so seasoned blocks for hollow forms, plus a few dozen roughed out hollow forms that are seasoned.
Then since I’m a self proclaimed wood hoarder tomorrow hopefully I’ll be cutting up a 30” diameter English Walnut , after which I’ll be cutting up a 24”+ D dogwood, + also a 24”+ sicamor. (We just had a major ice storm so lots of trees are being cleaned up).

I have a large covered shed where I store my wood. I have enough Koa, Milo, Kou, Lychee, Macadamia Nut, apple, cherry and several others, to last me a lifetime. Yet I went yesterday to get a load of Koa, lol. I just stack it, I dont paint the ends, I dont cut bowl blanks until i'm ready to turn it, generally when an order comes in, or I want to rough something. I keep several shelves full with rough turned Koa bowls for customers to choose from... All types of sizes and forms... I gave up years ago on using end sealers, wood is so plentiful here, and humid, I just cut keeping in mind some checking will occur. I used to get checking even with end grain sealer... Take a look at the pictures from my Koa hunting excursion... I'm happy to be alive today, I was awaken by a notice saying North Korea had launched a nuclear missile to us.... Aloha

I was thinking of you and Andy Cole when I watched the news.
Bad experience for everyone.

I once had the job of drawing circles on the US where Soviet missels could strike.
After a while all the circles were too big to draw. Then a new problem of how many warheads can you put in a nose cone? Scary stuff.

As I only have a couple of small storage areas I cut mine into rounds some of these mainly the plainer looking ones I will either give to members(they may find them as good practice at turning green wood) of the club and others I will rough turn.
This last lot I showed in my first post all came from some work being done less than 100feet away from my front door and then they even brought them around for me and put them in a pile in the back garden. They also will be back again later this year to continue the work so may have some more different woods.
