Big Leaf Maple Burl Bowl

Big Leaf Maple Burl Bowl

This 16" diameter Big Leaf Maple Burl was turned from a cap I scarfed at the 2002 symposium in Providence...for five bucks. It was turned flat and hollowed normally, but required a lot of hand sanding for safety reasons. The base is a tripod made from a shallow bowl turned from hard maple scrap, cut to shape the legs and painted black to "fade" way and be unobtrusive. This base was necssary, however, to stablize the burl and insure it would not tip easily. (Please note that the lower photo gives the impression that the piece isn't level...it is...the camera was tilted. Silly me...) Finish is BLO followed by Target Coatings USL wb acrylic laquer sprayed on via HVLP.
