Fantastic piece! Very well balanced.
Being relatively new to turning, your's are the first split finials I have seen. I've only turned a couple of finials myself. I can picture several possible ways to make a split finial. Do you "just" carve the turned finial?

The big fat finial is just that... a big fat finial turned in the usual manner and then attacked with various implements. I don't have any "fancy" stuff... just a Dremmel tool with a flex shaft and some small files so that's pretty much what I use. Then lots of sanding. The finial was more work than the form!
