Experiment

The outside of this mediocre, small elm bowl was coil-branded, silver leafed, and patinated. The patina colors are silver, gold, bronze, blue & purple.

The branding gives a nice texture, and the patina adds another level of interest. It was a fun experiment.

Of course, the picture is rotten, but presents the "essence of the piece". (thanks dave!)
I like this piece very much, -e-. The combination of surface treatments creates a very neat effect. Nice job. I can't wait to see where you go with this. It has a lot of possibilities.
Pam

Hi Dave and Pam ...

Although this is an interesting effect, the jury is still out ... there's something that just doesn't work but i don't know what it is yet. maybe it's just too sparkly.

Definitely, this is a piece to see in person. The photo just doesn't cut it. There are so many colors of the patina ... and texturing captures small cells with different hues.

So it has possibilities ... i think ... i'm going to live with it for a while and see what evolves

e, nice effect. How hard was it to put the metal leaf over the texture. It's something I want to try.

Paul

hi Paul. Setting the metal leaf over the texture was not a problem. I made certain the sizing was applied evenly and dried to tack. When the leaf was applied, i used my (clean/dry) thumb to very gently press leaf into the grooves.

I tend to browse around and pick the photo of the day. Baseing it on whatever catches my eye.
I really like this bowl. Very nicely done and worth exploring more of AS WELL AS getting better photos of it. Could be a real eye cather for judges in a juried exhibit. Nicely done! (And the photo of the day on Oct-13 2004!)

thanks steve! sorry for the poor quality picture. Unfortunately, the following pictures weren't much better. It seems this piece has some very difficult properties to photograph: color, texture, depth, and all glossy.

Hi -e-, I like the leafing on this piece. Where did you get the leafing supplies from? Also I've never done any leafing...is it easier to practice on a flat piece of wood or is the process pretty easy to master on textured items?

i see now that crafts supplies carries leafing, however i think i got my silver from Sepp ... however i saw that mister arts also has leafing material
http://www.misterart.com/search/index.cfm?searchstring=silver+leaf&store=ALL

i get my patina chemicals from Bryant Labs in Berkeley ... and i got most of my leafing instruction from David Marks -- check out his web site and video.

whether you experiment with flat or textured, i don't think it matters --- but david's video would really help with design concepts as well as technical details.

I think this is a wonderfull bowl - not too shiny but with a lot of different layers which makes it not too easy to grasp the global meaning at once.
Well done
Squirrel
