Summer 2008 Contest

"The Orange Slice Special" A woodturner's violin, designed, developed and built by the author. The soundboard, backboard, neck, pegs and end pin were constructed by turning, profiling, sectioning and gluing cedar, maple, ebony and rosewood. It was designed as a whimsical artform, but observed playability and sound requirements. Not a Stradivarius, but can be played! Made its debut at the 2008 Symposium Live Auction! Played on stage by a woodturner artist, purchased by a master and given to a very proud young adolescent.
Bernie, this was an absolute hit at the auction and the events immediately following were worth the trip to Richmond. Congrats for a wonderful piece of work and for your contribution to the EGO auction, not to mention, the new young owner's joy. I had a chance to speak with the aspiring fiddle player at the hotel after the auction and his smile said it all.

Bernie, I understand that there are many more turned pieces on this work than meet the eye! Amazing!

I had the opportunity to sit next to Bernie on the flight back from Richmond to Detroit after the conference. Bernie is not only a brilliant designer and talented woodturner, but he is also one of the nicest and most up-standing persons youll ever meet.

Bernie, congratulations on this wonderful instrument and the success you had at the symposium. Im looking forward to your next stringed masterpiece.

Thanks to everyone for their wonderful comments, I was away earlier in the month. The violin pieces turned on the lathe included the: soundboard and backboard, the neck started as a turning, the tuning pegs were turned as was the endpin. It was a moving experience to have contributed to the live auction and the finale with Andi Wolfe, Harvey Fein and Knick McKay I shall cherish those moments forever. Brodie thanks for your comments, Malcolm, your words gave added satisfaction to an already pleasurable experience. Kurt, thanks for the POD, much appreciated.
I had the pleasure of conversing with Jeff , (who I met at the airport in Richmond), for about 3 hours at the airport due to flight delay, and then we found out we were seatmates! He said all these nice things about me, but the respect is mutual as we spent approximately 4 hours talking because I found it so interesting talking to Jeff.
My next instrument will be an accoustic/electric guitar of my own design (turned round) and the designs are already started in my head. Jeff, perhaps one of your band members will have a chance to test-drive it!
