Gone Rusty

Keith Holt was very generous and sent me one of his face pieces So I made this box out of Rimu in exchange in the hope that his wife likes it enough to place in her collection as mine has with his face (the wooden one not his ) To get it to him before the Aaw Symposium I didnt have time to get any Photos so Keith very kindly supplied this one (still didnt get there on time ) It is so light that if a gust of wind came by it would fly away The box vessel itself is the same thickness as the wings To keep the strength in the wings I had to plan the grain orientation so no gain ended up going across the wings Maybe Keith could describe a bit more or even if he likes it You can see more of this style of box at the Dunn gallery Box Exhibition as Lynda was very kind in asking me to send a few up http://www.westhawaiitoday.com/articles/2010/06/26/features/ features04.txt The finial is ebony from a Piano key Comments welcome

Wow! Now that's a rustic looking piece. How interesting. And a piano key, huh? Also an interesting idea. Well done, Terry!

      Hello Terry,
I love the manta shape. This looks realy very thin, handle with care !
Just a question: what about your piano at the present time ?
      friendly, Lionel.

Old Pianos are a great source of ebony ,Shame as many are thrown out in the organic collection or you can by them for 30 or $40 The scrap value of the iron is about $40
After about 1950 the keys are actually stained black walnut ,but it is hard to tell until you turn it and find the wood wont hold the detail that Ebony or black wood will
The ivory keys are a thin laminate ok for box inserts but once again after 1950 ish are plastic
If I get a call from family or friends saying a piano is out on the side of the road or at the transfer station I drop everything take a chisel and hammer and get those keys fast before my woody mates find out about it
