Spanish Cedar, Curly Koa, Rosewood
I turned the exterior of this small vessel then tipped it in the chuck so the interior and opening are offset by just a bit, one side being 4.7mm thick at the opening the opposite, 11mm.
Then I turned a domed top, curved to match the top of the vessel from a small but striking piece of Koa Ron handed me. A separate thin ring was turned and attached to the underside of the lid to register it in the opening. Otherwise it's like setting a teacup upside down on a bowling ball!
The shed roof finial is from rosewood.
The finial had some hints of purple so I applied a light coat of tinted lacquer to the lid and several more coats of clear. The vessel is dyed black (Spanish Cedar is not particularly interesting wood) then clear coated.
I saw a similar piece done by Leew Francis (thank you for the inspiration) and was taken by the shape so thought I'd try my own.
