Honey Locust Egg

Honey Locust Egg

The opening is a perfect square when viewed from the top, the bird that hatched must have had an engineering degree. Honey Locust, 4" high and 3 1/2" diameter, with a wipe-on polyurethane finish hand-rubbed using white diamond buffing compound and some elbow grease.
Ken, what tool do you use to cut away the material to produce the "petal" effect?

Very nice, by the way! I'll be trying this one.

Greg, just a coping saw, then carving knives and sandpaper. To get the shape, I cut a wood square from a 2 x 4 same size as the round opening. Placed over the opening, it acted as a guide for a flat marking blade for scribing the petal shapes.

The idea came to me from one of Chris Wright's Challenge & Trade events he regularly holds over on the Woodturner's Resource website, where the theme for this one was to incorporate a square into the design. This one ended in Feb. '06.

Very nice Ken. I'd love to see a shot of the top.

Now if you could just _turn_ the opening square....
