Yes, he did, especially in his later nocturnes. He said that getting the viewers attention drawn into what was taking place outside the canvas was more important than setting the stage within the canvas.

in the last 10 years or so, people worldwide are protesting a variety of issues.....The women's March numbers was amazing.....One women's entire immediate female family went.......I am strongly for U.S. energy independence....Not sure how I feel about the stand off over pipeline and water supply, I know mistakes have been made in the past and everybody deserves clean water, just look at abandoned mines in West and in coal mining states.,...... Hopefully fracking can protect the scenic beauty of areas while energy supplies can be tapped......Parts of Dallas are fracked with homeowners earning royalties......Pretty amazing what has been worked out
