Lily Works

The wood-based lily pad was first turned, then carved. A sand-mold was then made and the Iron Lily was poured on the "April Fools 06 Iron Pour".
Looks great,e! Are they two separate pieces? Can't tell from the pic. Were the cracks part of the carving or did they "happen" some where in the process? They add to the piece, I think. Size?

carole --
yep ... two separate objects sitting side-by-side.

funny you should ask about the wood (it will appear again in another piece) -- this is my belated entry for the W/C 2-board feet contest (better late than never). i selected the hunk of wood for its cracks and shape. metal, especially iron, can be so bland that shape and texture is important.

jd- the color on the iron is a patina developed from applying bismuth, ferric nitrate, and potassium dichromate in layers to hot metal. a patina is a chemical reaction with the metal and not a coating, such a paint or dyes.
