Machiche with Holly collar
Paul Porter

Machiche with Holly collar

Machiche is a medium dense wood with heartwood that is reddish brown to yellowish brown. Fairly coarse grain, but machines well with sharp tools. Polishes and finishes well. Sometimes referred to as Carribean Cherry or Mayan Walnut.

Machiche comes from Central America.
That's an interesting wood Paul, thanks for providing the description. I like the complementary collar you did on this piece. What did you use for the finish?

Hi Jeff,

The finish is Watco Danish Oil. I sand the piece up to 1200 grit, put several coats of oil and buff with the Beall system. It gives it a nice sheen and you can still feel the wood.
