Octahedron

My latest Platonic solid. An octahedron has 8 identical faces (equilateral triangles) and can be thought of as 2 pyramids joined at their base. Completely formed on the lathe. It is a box with a spherical interior

always love your stuff......early north American people use soapstone to make effigy pipes.....did you carve & turn the base??????? it has great color, where did you get the soapstone from????/ most I have seen is solid black with grey areas, not mixed color like your base......the receptacle pyramid is outstanding

Thanks Charlie. I built our kitchen about 13 years ago, including all the cabinets. The original kitchen (house is over 200 yrs old) had soapstone (from VT) counters and it was all dark like you describe. We decided on going with soapstone again, but there are no longer active quarries in VT, so this is soapstone that was imported from Argentina. I have a bunch that was left over, and it is soft enough to use woodworking tools. Stone was cut on the bandsaw and all shaping was done on my belt/disc sander to form the pyramid.
