This wedding goblet is 8" tall and made from Pau Rojo (Padauk). I made it for some friends who are finally getting married next month.
This piece had a small amount of spalted sap wood at the edge and I thought that it would make a fitting wedding goblet. I managed to get the join between heart and sap woods on the centre line of the goblet to show that both partners are equal in the marriage.
This wood was very dry and the sap wood was very prone to splintering and so was a bit of a challenge to turn. I tried making the captive rings in the usual way but the open grain and the sap wood made this impossible (for me anyway). I therefore made the rings from beech and painted them gold.
Sanded to 1200 then sanding sealer and friction polish followed by Renaissance wax.
