Pierced Sycamore Ornament
This Sycamore Ornament has Walnut finials. It won 1st place in our local, South Kansas Woodturners, club contest for both the lightest and the best looking. It measures about 2 1/2" w x 5" h and has a wall thickness ranging from .030 to .050. The design is comprised of the word, NOEL on two sides with holly leaves and berries between them and random piercing top and bottom. It was a challenge to hollow this larger ornament as most of my hollowing tools are not shaped to get into the bottom of the shape near the hollowing entrance hole. I find a 1 1/2" to 2" globe is more the ideal size. Mostly I use a 1/2" to 5/8" hole for hollowing depending on my globe size.
