Remembrance

Ginkgo leaves carved from a turned bowl of ginkgo wood. The wood came from one of the ginkgo trees that used to live in the courtyard of the Botany and Zoology building at Ohio State University. The trees were cut down to make room for an auditorium that was built during the renovation of the building. Size: 8.5 inches diameter.

Another beautiful piece. I'm trying to visualize this one starting life as a turned bowl and I'm amazed how you can see the finished piece in a rough turned bowl.

I'm curious about the stand. Was it carved too?

Are the gingko trees still on the south side of the main library? I haven't been past there in years.

Ron - I'll update my weblog soon and put the rough stages there for you. This started out as a thick-walled bowl with three rims or wings. It was kind of mind-boggling doing the layout and carving through that tangled mess.

The stand is made from glass.
