Ring suspended vessel

Ring suspended vessel

Another reliquary, this time with the vessel supported by brass pins inside a ring. There's slight lip on the inner container so it sits just proud of the hole and the top fits over the rim. The vessel walls are about 1/8" thick.

The ring is made up of several layers of veneer, glued like plywood with alternating grain directions. That makes it pretty strong and staple. The ring was actually cut out using a router in a circle cutting fixture, although it could be turned on the lathe. It was a little easier this way.

I don't know what the vessel wood is (I lost the label) but the others are wenge, rosewood, and sycamore.

Comments welcome.
I just discovered that this piece was selected for the cover photo on the WOW site for Feb 3rd, 2010. I know I'm bragging a bit, but it's a great honor to be selected and I appreciate it.
