Spalted Birch Bowl

Spalted Birch Bowl

This Spalted Birch bowl is about 9 1/2" x 3 3/4", finished with Watco Danish oil. I was surprised that it so translucent, but just on the end grain. When I first noticed it I checked the thickness, thought I might be turning through it. From my experience this is a tricky wood to let spalt. They seem to turn to mush real quickly. I was having trouble with tear out on the end grain, so I coated it with Danish oil then let it set for a few weeks. It did help, I was able to get a good finish after that.
