Summer 2008 Contest 1

Viper Handle. Maple with copper ferrule. 19" long, 2 1/4" across width of head. Initial turning shaped the ferrule end and established the axis through to the head. The compound curves were shaped off the lathe. The piece was hand carved with Flexcut palm gouges, finished first with Danish oil, then with acrylic glazes that define color and pattern while allowing the wood grain to show through. The handle is mounted with a 1/2" Jordan Hollowing tool. This is one of series of handles inspired, in a way, by the Glaser Commermorative Gouges. As a craftsperson, I'll make a personal interpretation of something too dear to buy.
