"The Planet Arizona"

My largest sphere to date, 11-1/2" in diameter and almost 20 pounds. Turned from a gnarly piece of Mesquite Burl I bought in Tumacacori, AZ a couple of years ago. After turning I carefully carved and cleaned the voids, worm burrows and bark inclusions leaving surfaces reminiscent of the canyon lands of the desert southwest. I then used an assortment of gilders pastes to add subtle color to the canyon walls and bottoms. The base is turned from an English Walnut branch crotch, the entire surface with the exception of the sphere locating recess has been tortured with a wire wheel. All pieces are finished with a satin polyurethane spray. Thank you for looking!!
