Twisted Mesquite

This 9 inch tall vase was turned from a mesquite log. The section used was selected to include some of the lighter sapwood which appears as the lighter highlights in the turning. The top section was turned with a 3-point off-axis method to provide a twist and the opening was carved to enhance the twisted shape

Really like how the sapwood color blended in and how you off center turned the top of the vase. Well done indeed!

Thanks Lamar. I recently heard John Jordan talk about integrating the sapwood into the selection of wood to be turned and thought I would give it a try. I really like the mesquite as a turning wood and was pleasantly surprised at how well the sapwood and surrounding grains came 'through' in the final piece. I have been experimenting with the off center turning for a few years now and continue to explore additional ways to integrate the technique with solid and segmented designs.
