This now completed 4x6 maple luminary was the example of a nearly complete vessel for my demonstration at the Seattle Woodturners' October mini-Symposium. It is adapted from a Swiss wall hanging from around 1820. This view is in normal everyday room lighting.

I made this project during an IRD to help me in the kitchen now that Fall is here, and I'll be spending more time creating my favorite dishes. The pestle is made from figured maple, and I'm not sure about the mortar, although it does have beautiful fiddleback and chatoyancy.

This is my first ever attempt at segmenting. There are 48 segments with a walnut base. The process is really enjoyable and more segmenting will be coming!

Maple Burl wall hanging with water and alcohol-based dyes and many coats of spray lacquer. The center is the handiwork of termites, some of Mother Nature's own artists... I embellished the outer rim with a torch to contrast against the dye and to complement the natural color in the center.

My first segmented piece… I used maple with walnut veneer to give a “grout” line look. Top and bottom rings are from walnut to contrast and tie together. Lid is curly maple with walnut knob, reflecting the box shape.
