Well, if they are participating in woodturning groups on Facebook, you would not see their group postings anyway as those would go onto the group's "feed" rather than their own personal feeds. At least a few of the popular groups are also invitation only, so someone has to let you in before you can see or post anything. This allows the group moderators to kick out people who failed to learn manners in grade school, etc.
Yep. Our chapter has a FB page, although not as many people participate as we would like. Posts will get 20-40 "views" but often only a few responses. I must say, though, when one of our members was having a problem with the switch on his grinder, lots of people pitched in to help him out.

So, acknowledging that I very sporadically visit the main AAW site, how do I know that there is an election taking place? or that there is/was a survey "currently in progress?" Reading through this thread, I've felt a bit guilty about not being aware there was an election. How far ahead of the election do the nominees and their statements become public?
As a member you would get an email telling you of the election.......if you have your setting set to receive email notification.

Elections:
There are sort of four ways to find out about it. It is published in the AAW journal, it is posted on the AAW website, email news, and most chapters remind members to vote.

This year it was on page 6 of the August Journal. The article includes each candidate's statement and the section at the top has the voting dates and how to vote electronically or by paper.

It is easy to overlook if you aren't looking for it.

Chapter survey:
Only goes to members of a chapter. Each chapter was asked to'distribute the survey URL to their members.
I received an email from my chapter yesterday and it was announced at yesterday's chapter meeting.

Sounds like a bit more hassle than here, plus I might get kicked off of there!

Not that it can't happen here either... :)

I can take a hint. :D I might even consider easing up on hassling you. ... Nah!

I believe that there was a ballot affixed to the American Woodturner journal a few months ago. And there were candidate statements in the journal. But, if you're like me and just look at the pictures .....

Well I applaud all who volunteer. There is a lot of work to be done and I don't think the average turner really sees how much they have to do. I was certainly suprised when I talked to a few over the years.

I fully agree with you. On one hand, it is really rewarding because the greater the effort that you put into an organization the more you get out of it. I spent five years as newsletter editor and webmaster for our club as well as working on anything else where help was needed. It is good to spread the responsibilities around and not have the same few people do most of the work year after year.

Regarding announcements in my club, they often don't get much more than a brief mention because of the sheer volume of stuff that we cram into a 2½ hour long meeting. I think that the AAW board member election got about a five word sentence, "Don't forget the AAW election". Most members probably forgot most of the announcements before the next thing on the meeting schedule.
