12/4/05 Rules #6 updated with size restriction - 5" D x 1.5" H maximum.

Thanks to Steve for drafting these rules.

Contest:
This is the announcement of the 4th contest - focusing on Layered Bowls.
If you missed the last contests, do a search for "contest" in the forum
search.

Rules for this contest:
  1. Deadline is Sunday, January 8th (2006) midnight. (The contest was announced 11/25/05, so this gives ~6 weeks including 7 weekends to complete
    the submission).
  2. Each participant will create a layered bowl...in line with the feature
story on page 14 from the Winter 2005 AW Journal issue
  3. Any and all turned layered bowls submissions will be considered
  4. The bowl must be created after 11/25/05 (corresponding to the AW Journal
    Winter 2005 issue)
  5. One submission per person
  6. Note size restrictions: 5" D x 1.5" H maximum
  7. Contest is open to all, including AAW members and non-members.

How to submit:
  1. Post your entry in the photo gallery and label it "AAW Forum contest
entry" so people will recognize it.
  2. Also email Jeff when you submit the entry, and he will track the entries -
email to jjilg@sbcglobal.net. He will respond with an acknowledgement, unless
the spam filter rejects your email. If he doesn't send an acknowledgement, then
send him a Private Message (PM) via the PM function in this forum. Also he
will maintain a list of entries in the forum near the end of the contest.

Winner and Prize:

Winner selection:
Some super huge name in woodturning will be more than happy to be the judge,
as soon as we ask them!

The prize is:
1) The winner will be announced in the forum, and on the AAW homepage.
2) The winner will also be announced in the AW Journal.

The winning woodturner will be requested to write a short description about
the piece, their inspiration for it, and a short woodturner biography. This
write-up from the artist will be due within 1 week after the contest results
are announced. The write-up will be turned into a webpage. The webpage would
be announced and linked on the homepage similar to the last winner Brian
Rosencrantz as shown here

Please ask any questions if any of this is unclear or if there is a typo of
some type. Also please feel free to enter the contest - bowls are a great
skill builder, and can encompass many design and style elements, especially
this type. And did I mention they are always welcome holiday gifts?

Jeff,

1) Will I receive the winter issue of the Journal if I've joined the AAW for 2006?

2) In the rules section above, item number one says... "(The contest was...."

The contest was what? The contest was cancelled? The contest was made up by one legged purple aliens? The contest was hilarious? :p

Inquiring minds want to know...

Oh. And what is a layered bowl?

JimQ - a layered bowl is a bowl with a bunch of layers of wood glued together. I had never seen instructions on it either, and the article in the Winter issue is very good at explaining it.

Underdog - currently the issues are setup for an annual subscription. If you joined for 2006, you will get 4 issues starting with Spring 2006. The contest was.....and you guys are supposed to fill in the blank...just kidding. Steve wrote the draft and I didn't cut'n'paste it correctly. Just fixed it.

Thanks Jeff,

I guess I'll borrow a friends copy of the Journal...

Or I guess I could just start gluing up all the scraps in my shop and see what happens......

I guess a layered bowl is not necessarily a segmented bowl? But it could be?

Layered is closer to laminated than segmented. Segmented you are ussaul trying to create a design, chevron, thunderbird, etc. Laminated is same wood and same thickness or maybe some contrast in the wood but same thickness. Layered according to the article is at least two woods, one of which is highly figured or colorful and of greatly differing thickness. Before reading the article I would have called it laminated. Good article and good contest. I am inspired as I have some maple burl and some walnut that I didn't know what to do with.

Size restriction added on 12/4/05

5" D x 1.5" H maximum (in Rules #6).

Also, please be careful is you use C.A. glue. In the article in a couple of pictures it appears the C.A. glue is being touched or spread by his fingers. You should not touch C.A. It can be not only glue your finger to the wood, but it can also do this in a very short period of time chemically. And if it does react chemically it can burn your skin.

Ok,

I'm confused by the size restriction....

If the bowl can only be 1.5 inches high, how can it be 5 inches deep?

Oh... 5 inch Diameter!

Doh!

Maybe "layered" is the same as "stack laminated"? For those who can't spare the $40 and don't know anyone who gets the Journal, is there some way we can see the article in question?

Thanks Dave,
Yep, that's stack-laminated. Beautiful work! I did not see any segmented "layers" in his 2005 gallery, but I'll bet he has done some.

Russ - sorry for the late reply. I missed your question. Yes - segmented layers will be fine.

Texian - currently we don't plan to put the article on the website, or distribute it outside the Journal.

Just finished my first piece

I just finished my first piece I need to take some good pictures of it. Is there a requirement for the size of the file?

Thanks

Yes there are file size limits, currently 80kb for photos in the photo-forum area. For photo tips and also general help see the "Help, Rules, and FAQ" menu item at the top of the page. Lemme know if you still have questions.

Contest Judge has volunteered

Sorry this took so long. Jim McPhail, the author of the Layered Bowls article has gratiously volunteered to judge the Winter layered bowl contest.

I sent him an email a couple of weeks ago and didn't get a response. I accidently had an "L" tacked onto the *.comL portion of his email ID. Anyhow he's going to be the judge and he's looking forward to seeing the entries.

Shucks...

I just got my layers glued up today...

But as I looked back over the contest rules for the deadline, I noticed that I'm 2 1/4 over the height restriction...

I guess I'll have a pretty bowl that doesn't meet requirements... Oh well.

I knew there was something I could do with that extra stuff...

Or you can turn it down.

Huh UH! NO! Ain't gonna do THAT! :D

Yeah, I had some stuff left over from gluing up the other. I haven't turned the first one yet... But there's no way I'm wasting THAT wood. (You'll see why when I post the pix.) But I did turn the second one tonight. Need to get a good finish on it, take the pix and put it up there..

I had a piece of cocobolo that was not wide enough for the top rim, so I edge glued two pieces together to make it wide enough. But -- I guess that it is now, strictly speaking, a segmented bowl.

Well that makes at least two of us Bill... :D

One more question that will soon be moot.

Who's time midnight? East Coast, West Coast, Central?
