Face plate equivalent of beads and coves

So, for those of us who feel like making fire starters:

What's are some good exercises for faceplate work? (Kind of like making bead-and-cove sticks as a spindle exercise)?

Turning balls with a bowl gouge is a great for improving tool control.
They teach you to turn curves. With spheres there is a known target shape. Turn twenty balls and you bowls and hollow forms will have better curves.

You can practice the pull cut on a cylinder switching forward hands on each pass.
Turn 3 sided spindles with the pull cut. This pull cut is interrupted and is good practice for the outside if natural edge bowl.
