"Follow the Sun"

Hey Fellow Turners,
Here is a piece I just finished that is #2 of a collection named "Spring Emerges." Its named "Follow the Sun.". It and other pieces will be the focal point of my opening and show this fall at the Strawn Art Gallery. It is a combination of Australian Red Mallee, Brown Mallee, Black Ash and Purple Leaf Plum. All the Pedestals are Ebonized Holly. The finials are also Holly. The Base is a slab of burled California Redwood. The base finish is Satin lacquer. Two of the flowers are dyed with a power Dye and then Lacquered. The others are finished with several coats of Tung Oil and then buffed when dried. I apologize for the photo quality with the shadows, it was too big for my photo tent. I Hope you like it. Your comments and critiques are always welcome. Thanks.

Beautiful work! I am a new guy at turning but am amazed at the skill and time taken to turn these flowers. Are the stems turned also? They look too slender for a turning.

Yes, they are turned American Holly, which is a very dense hardwood and you can turn it to a thin diameter. I then ebonized them by using a vinegar and steel wool solution, and after after they dried, I shot them with Satin Lacquer.
