According to Russ Fairfield in his "Finishing Secrets" 3 disk video set, all finishes are food safe after they have gassed off. When fully dry and no longer giving off an odor, they are safe for food use.
However, I am not sure about the overall durability of a friction polish. I know that a pen and other small objects I have turned look greatest first but lose ther shine quickly.
I think that a salad bowl finish would give a high gloss that will last.
