Guess that wood

    Hint as to the area of origin? Local tree, north, south US, exotic from wherever?

    Do you know the US forest products lab will ID up to 5 samples of wood per year for every US citizen. All they need is a small sample sent in an envelope. Usually takes several weeks to get the results.

    I have made a bit of a hobby IDing wood with a razor blade, hand lens and microscope. I got started with R. Bruce Hoadley's book "Identifying Wood." The online Wood Database also has info. I got interested in this after bowl was passed around at a club meeting marked "cherry" on the bottom. No way - it was moderately diffuse porous. Once in another forum someone had a wood ID question and she sent a sample to me and to the government lab. I was happy to hear we both had the same answer (but it was elm, an easy species!)
