I encourage you to check out Woodworking shows. http://www.thewoodshows.com/
If you live within 2-3 hours of one of their nearly 30 locations it is well worth the trip. While they are general woodworking there is a lot for turners at these shows. They are great place to have a club booth! I know there a lot of other clubs with booths at the these shows.

The show in Tampa had quite a bit for the turners. The demonstrations by Kirk Deheer were terrific! These were information packed how to presentations (not infomercials). Kirk did free demos all day on topics such as sharpening, working with green wood, pens, bowls and a lot more.
Kirk will be giving his Sharpening demonstration in Portland. Watching Kirk for a day will be time well spent for anyone and give you a small taste of what you would see at a mini symposium and a hint of the AAW symposium.

How we did it. This year the Tri-county Woodturners and the Woodturners of Polk County teamed up to run a booth at the woodworking show. The wood show provided us a 30x10 space with tables and chairs. We set up 3 lathes for demonstrations, a mini instant gallery table, and a club information table. All club members working at the booth got in free for the day.
It is hard for a single club to staff a booth for 3 days. Having several clubs involved solves this problem and has many other benefits. The Woodshows give a larger space to joint clubs, folks from different clubs get to know each other, and attendees can talk with the club closest to where they live. Last year the show was in Orlando and the Central Florida, Spacecoast, and Polk county clubs shared a booth. Multi clib booths are the way to go! We began planning this in November for a March show. 2 months is probably the minimum time you can both get your club members involved and work the details with the woodshow people.

5 people we met at the woodworking show attended the Tri county meeting this past week. The woodworking show is one of the best places I’ve found to demonstrate and attract new members. A new Powermatic and a couple of new band saws went home at show prices with our club members.

Happy Turning,
Al
