I think I had posted about a dead dogwood tree in the backyard. My son cut it up and stacked it in the burn pile. I went out this morning and looked at the cutoffs. There are several ranging from 2 inches in diameter to about a foot in diameter. The photo is typical of the grain and condition...
THIS WAS A CROTCH IN A DOGWOOD AT MY FOLKS HOUSE, KATRINA KILLED IT AND ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF LATER AS IT WAS BEING CUT DOWN I NOTICED THAT IT HAD SPALTED. I DIDN'T KNOW THAT WOOD COULD SPALT WHILE STILL STANDING. THIS PIECE WAS 7 FEET UP AND IS ABOUT 10 X 7 X 4.

Turned wet down to final thickness between 1/16 - 1/8". Nooks &...
Another piece of amazing spalted Dogwood. This bowl is 4.125" w x 3.125" h. It has a Walnut base with a Swarovski crystal.
You can see more detail shots on my site...
A friend called when a Dogwood tree was knocked down in his yard. The closer we cut to the stump the more vivid color and spalt we saw. What we did not see was the powder post beetles.... '8-O
I refused to surrender my find to bugs, the small stuff got tossed outside but the stump got double...
