Description: My entry into the latest contest. This cherry platter is 11" diameter x 1-3/4" tall and sets on a 2-3/4" diameter foot which allowed for a shallow inner bowl. The grooves were first colored black with a silver overlay.

Description: Last Saturday 6-26-10 was our club (The Midsouth Woodturners Guild) meeting and I was asked to demo HF's. I decided rather than to do a larger form that I would do a smaller form using my 5/16" kelton hollowers thru a 1/2" opening. Anyway this is the result. 3-1/2" diameter x 4" tall. Again this one will go to the club for our Christmas Auction.

Curly Maple HF

Description: The maple blank for this was gifted to me by Robin Costelle awhile back, THANKS Robin. Thought it was time to turn it. It measures 7-1/4" diameter x 14-1/2" to the top of the blackwood finial. The inset for the lid is ebony. The finial and lid are about 4-1/4" tall. Finished with brush on lacquer and buffed.

Description: Our club, the Midsouth Woodturners Guild, has started a "hands on class" where attendees can actually participate and get to try/learn new things. We are doing one class every three months right now. The first one was on sharpening which I missed. The one yesterday was on hollow forms and I was the instructor. The class only lasts 2 hours so I wasn't sure what I was going to do other than use my jamieson system so I decided I better rough out the outside before I went and then we could do the inside. I was really suprised when there were 22 members that showed up. There were 5 or 6 that actually tried the system. Most of them were new turners and had never hollowed. It was a lot of fun to see them do it and realize that it's not that difficult. Anyway this is the piece from yesterday, I finished it up today. 6-1/2" diameter x 10-1/4" tall with holly finial and inset. It will be donated back to the club for our annual Christmas auction.

Description: I picked up an Ebony blank a year or two ago and finally turned it this past weekend. Has some nice coloring I think. Anyway it measures 5-1/2" dia. x 6-1/4" tall. Sanded thru 800 grit. No finish applied, just buffed.

Black Palm HF

Description: We just returned home Sunday afternoon after a week in Colorado visiting my Daughter, SIL and five Grandsons. Had a great time but couldn't wait to get in the shop. I got this Black Palm blank at Woodcraft in Colorado Springs. It measures 3-3/4" dia. x 4-1/2" tall with ebony finial, inset and bun foot. I asked my daughter to go back and get any of these blanks they had left. They had two.

Buckeye Burl

Description: It's been awhile since I've done a piece with my Explanation Point finial and decided to try one incorporating the design in a pedestal. This piece measures 3-1/2" dia. x 7-1/2" tall. The finial and pedestal are blackwood with a buckeye top on the finial and buckeye insert on the pedestal. Finished with brush on lacqure and buffed.

Costelle/Burns Colaboration

Description: One of the big advantages of hosting an out of towner demonstrator, besides spending time with a really great guy, is that you get some one on one training. I learned a lot from Robin Costelle. He wanted to do a colaboration piece as a gift for my wife so Sunday we turned this together. Buckeye Burl with Blackwood. It measures 3-1/2" diameter x 6" tall. Finished with wipe on lacquer and buffed. This piece would blow away in a slight breeze as it only weighs 1-5/8 oz. Robin, Judi and I both thank you.

Description: My friend Mark Cothren gave me some spalted sweet gum whe he came for a visit. This is the first turned for that gift. Measures 5-1/2" diameter x 6-1/2" tall. Finished with brush on lacqure and buffed.

Description: This is a Manzanita Root HF measuring 8-3/4" diameter x 7-1/4" tall. Walls approximately 1/4". I don't normally name my pieces but this one looks like it was dug up at an archilogical dig.

Red Gum HF

Description: Red Gum measures 4-1/2" dia. x 4-1/2" to the top of the lid then add another 3-3/16" for the finial. Walls are -1/8". Ebony foot, finial and lid trim. The finial has a red gum insert. Finish is antique oil and buffed.

Maple Leaf Bowls

Description: Started buy turning a few shallow ogee shaped bowls and then using my powercrafter piercing tool to cut out the leafs. All are about 5" dia. and died with akaline dyes. Clockwise from top left, Rocky Mountain Maple, Red Maple, Sugar Maple and Vine Maple. All turned from box elder. Nothing original here but it was a step out for me to take a perfectly good bowl and cut it apart.

Description: Like many I still have not found much lathe time. Still trying to figure out where it went. Anyway Ed Koenig gave me a nice hunk of maple several months ago and I have been working on it for at least a month. The wood has a lot going on with it including some burl. Lid and finial are ebony. Measures 6" dia. x 11" tall. Finished with antique oil and buffed.

Description: A couple of months ago my friend Bob Speier made a trip to Texas and he was kind enough to bring me back some mesquite. This is the first piece I have turned from it. It measures 5" dia. x 8-1/2" tall with the walls at 3/16". Finished with antique oil and buffed. Did I mention that mesquite is my favorite wood. It always has so much going on.

Leopardwood Segmented Box

Description: Segmented leopardwood and Ebony. There are 98 pieces plus veneers and the ebony finial. The foot is ebony with the same veneers as the top. Measures 3-1/2" dia. x 6-1/4" overall height. Finished with antique oil and buffed.

Description: This is from a my first purchase of wood from Ebay. When I received it my first thought was I had been had but once I cut into it I quickly changed my mind. So much wonderful color in the wood. Anyway, this is another small one measuring 2-3/4" dia. x 6-3/8" to the top of the ebony finial. Finished with antique oil and buffed.

Description: It has been awhile since I've had any real shop time but finally I did. My friend Joan Kelly gave me a spalted birch log and this is half of it. It measures 5" dia. x 9" tall to the top of the Ebony Finial. Finished with antique oil and buffed. This started out with a 1/2" opening but a small miscalculation caused it to be 7/8". Oh well................

Description: I picked up a couple pieces of Masur Birch at the recent TAW Symposium and this is what I got out of one. I love this wood. This HF is 5" dia. x 5-1/2" tall w/o the finial. With the finial it is 9-1/4" tall. Hollowed thru a 1/2" opening. Finial is Blackwood.

Description: This is from a dry piece of Spalted Hackberry from Kentucky with an Ebony Finial.The body is 3" dia. x 6-1/8" tall. With the finial it is 9-3/8" tall. Hollowed thru the 1/2" top opening. Finished with antique oil and buffed.

Description: I got this piece of burl in a lopsided trade with my friend Mark Cothren (I got the better deal). I've never turned Amboyna before but I assure you I will turn it again. Wonderful wood. This box measures 3-1/4" dia. x 3-1/4" to the top of the ebony knob. Walls 1/8". Finished with antique oil and buffed.

Description: This piece was inspired by my friend Mike Fusion's segmented work. Been wanting to try it for awhile and finally got it done. The most difficult part is getting the alignment right. The finial is also segmented or stave constructed containing 4 pieces. Measures 3-3/8" dia. x 5-1/4" overall height. Finished with antique oil and buffed.

Description: All I can say is be carefull what you do because it can come back and bite you ! A few weeks ago I sent my friend Robin Costelle a finial and challenged him to put something "under it". Well early last week I received a package in the mail from Robin and guess what was in it. The pedestal under this box with a note saying "put something on top of it". Now this was a real challenge to try and come up with something to go on a Costelle pedestal. Anyway this box is it and I hope Robin is pleased. The box is Spalted Maple. I tried to mimick Robin's pedestal with the finial, a daunting task especially for a simple turner like me. This measures 2-3/4" diameter by 12-1/2" tall. Please feel free to comment as they are welcomed !

I was fortunate to have this piece selected to be in the Christian Brothers University's permanent collection. Their permanent collections are on display somewhere on the campus year round.

Description: Lidded Container. While everyone was in Richmond having fun I was forced to stay home and I had to do something to entertain myself. Turned from a small Mesquite Log it measures 3" in diameter x 8-1/2" tall. Ebony Finial. No finish applied, just buffed. I have said it before and I will say it again, Mesquite is wonderful !

Description: #13 in this Flat Top Series. I have not done any Staved or Segmented work in 2 years and decided I should. Had to break out my notes on how to do it and to make sure that I did it right. This one is Maple with veneers and Ebony Lid/Finial. Measures 5-1/2" dia. x 10-1/2" tall. Comments/critiques always welcome.
