It is Cherry 7 3/4" Diameter and 1 3/4" tall. The platter was turned to an ogee shape with a "bowl" depression. The areas under the texturing were then carved to make a flowing transition from the rim to the bottom of the platter. The final texturing was burned in to give additional feel of fluid movement. Subsequently the blank spalted and gave a nice pattern but still left most of the figure on the rim unchanged. I chose to have the ogee shape and wide rim as flatter surfaces highlight this type of grain best, and then used direct lighting to best capture it. The bead acts to frame the bowl depression from the rim. The finished piece is 10 3/4" Diameter and 2 1/8" tall.

3 comments chriskuehn Sun, 09 Apr 2006 09:37:36 -0700 Layered Orb http://www.aawforum.org/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=1836

by: chriskuehn

Description: This was my first layered bowl, I started it before I found the contest and it didnt make the size requirements. Sorry for the reflections its a very shiny bowl!

1 comment chriskuehn Tue, 17 Jan 2006 21:47:54 -0700 AAW layered bowl contest entry http://www.aawforum.org/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=1815

by: chriskuehn

Description: This is the bowl for the contest entry. My wife named it "spider" for the lacewood pattern. The woods are lacewood, B. walnut (two layers), Bloodwood, and bookmatched Wenge. The bowl is 4 7/8" dia and 1 3/8" tall. I did not apply the final finish as I have had a VERY hard time with refecltions while taking photos of high gloss items. I really enjoyed the article and made four different bowls. My favorite I didnt post yet (its glossy, and didnt meet the size requirements).

4 comments chriskuehn Sun, 08 Jan 2006 22:01:41 -0700 Layered bowl http://www.aawforum.org/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=1813

by: chriskuehn

Description: Here is another layered bowl, I tried to get the maximum depth and went a little thin. When I vac chucked it and put a detail on the bottom a minute later the bottom imploded. I recovered by gluing an additional 1/8" bloodwood layer and returning it. This one I call "target", woods are birdseye maple, bloodwood, and bookmatched wenge. Size is 1.5" tall by 5" dia. Thanks for looking

1 comment chriskuehn Sun, 08 Jan 2006 20:17:54 -0700
