Turn it, then
burn, dye, bleach, carve, sandblast, paint, marker, chainsaw, boil, gild ,hammer - whatever your idea of embellished is. But it needs to be a platter. Contest: This is the announcement of the 6th contest - focusing on Embellished Platter. If you missed the last contests, do a search for "contest" in the forum search. Rules for this contest:
Winner selection: Some super huge name in woodturning will be more than happy to be the judge, as soon as we ask them! The prize is: 1) The winner will be announced in the forum, and on the AAW homepage. 2) The winner will also be announced in the AAW Journal. The winning woodturner will be requested to write a short description about the piece, their inspiration for it, and a short woodturner biography. This write-up from the artist will be due within 1 week after the contest results are announced. The write-up will be turned into a webpage. The webpage would be announced and linked on the homepage similar to the last winner Gary Ljostad as shown here Please ask any questions if any of this is unclear or if there is a typo of some type. Also please feel free to enter the contest - platters are a great skill builder, and can encompass many design and style elements. Let your imagination run wild, this is supposed to be fun!!! ...Jeff Jilg and Steve Worcester ...your friendly neighborhood moderators

Steve How can the winner bring the piece to the symposium if the contest ends in July. Are you talking about next years symposium?

Didn't they tell you? The AAW, working in secret partnership with the U.S. Postal Service, has actually discovered a method for time travel. Therefore after the winner is named in August, they and their piece will be transported back in time to June 21st so that their platter can be included in the the Loo-vul Instant Gallery. The prior research which led to this great discovery did have its rocky moments, however, such as when a number of issues of the Winter 2005 Journal were accidentally time-warped into the future leading to their being delivered months after others even though they had only actually been in the postal system for a few days' of "real" time. My source informs me that they are still working on the potential paradox of the winning entry being displayed before it was created, but I'm told that they are confident they can overcome this "minor detail". I truly hope they get it solved because my source also tells me that failure to do so could result in the end of all life on this planet as we know it or a high likelihood of the Sun going supernova. This is, in part, why I'm driving to Louisville this year. I'm bringing an old student desk like those used when I was in 3rd grade. I figure if anything happens I'll have just enough time to get under it and therefore be protected. M |

Well, Mark, while conspiracy theory folks would probably validate your response, it is much more likely that Jeff didn't proofread my edited cut and paste.
Although I don't find it unreasonable that it might be brought to Portland in 07 to great fanfare and accolades.

Mark Even with those advances in time warp, worm holes, and string theory, Bill Grumbine would still get his issue late.

John - that is correct but for the wrong reason. We put Bill on the "mail these copies late" list....we aim to please!
Steve is right - I got lazy and was soaked up in board work so I missed that one. However if you guys think the AAW should invest in time travel technology then we could definitely capitalize on future woodturning inventions now! |

I think you have it a little mixed up Mark. I have learned from experience that a package does not travel backwards in time, but forward in time. What happens is when you mail something in June, it will be sure to arrive in August. |

That's what I said, the Winter Journal was warped FORWARD so instead of being delivered in early December, it showed up in late February after a trip of only a few days. Still planning on taking my old desk, though, just in case. |

I think that capitalizing on future woodturning inventions now could give a whole new meaning to going postal.
