Default Summer 2005 AAW forum woodturning contest - Lidded Box (entries due 7/3/05)

This is the announcement of the 2nd contest - focusing on Lidded Boxes. If you missed the first contest, it was announced here and the results were listed here.

Rules for this contest:
  1. Deadline is Sunday July 3, midnight. (The contest was announced 6/4/05, so this gives 4 weeks including 4 weekends to complete the submission).
  2. Each participant will create a Lidded Box...in line with the feature story from the Summer 2005 AW Journal issue
  3. Any and all turned wooden lidded box submissions will be considered
  4. The box must be created after 5/16/05 (corresponding to the AW Journal Summer 2005 issue)
  5. One submission per person
  6. No size restrictions

How to submit:
  1. Post your entry in the photo gallery and label it "AAW Lidded Box contest entry" so people will recognize it.
  2. Also email me when you submit the entry, and I'll track the entries - email to jjilg@sbcglobal.net. I will respond with an acknowledgement, unless the spam filter rejects your email. If I don't send an acknowledgement, then send me a Private Message (PM) via the PM function in this forum.

Winner and Prize:

The mechanism to determine the winner will be announced after the deadline.

The prize is:
1) The winner will be announced in the forum, and on the AAW homepage.
2) The winner will also be announced in the AW Journal.

The winning woodturner will be requested to write a short description about the piece, their inspiration for it, and a short woodturner biography. Then I'll workup the content into a webpage. The webpage would be announced and linked on the homepage similar to the last winner Mike Schwing as shown here
Please ask any questions if any of this is unclear or if there is a typo of some type. Also please feel free to enter the contest - lidded boxes are fun to make!

Default reminder and contest update

This is a reminder that the contest entries are due in 2 weeks.

Update on contest judging:
As indicated in the announcement, the judging process has changed. A judge will be selected by the board to judge the contest. In this particular contest, Ray Key has generously agreed to volunteer his valuable time to judge the entries and select the top box! Thanks to Phil Brennion for corresponding with Ray, and thanks in advance to Ray for judging.

Jeff
Sorry for my comment but I have to say it.
When the pictures are posted before the deadline and the amatures look at the photos I'm sure some will say WOW I CAN'T COMPETE WITH THAT and not bother to send any entries. I think waiting till the end to post photos will get more entries.

SORRY

Not to take anything away from Ken's post, but it can go the other way as well, maybe someone has already made a box (or was planning to) that they feel wouldn't be good enough to compete with all these accomplished folk and by getting to see what has already been done, could prompt them to enter.

I am in No Way good enough at boxes to enter with or without seeing any entries, but seeing them does encourage me to give box turning a try.

I hope that howing the entries encourages, rather than discourages more entries!

Well, I just saw John Lucas' entry but I'm going to enter mine anyway, as soon as I get it photographed (whatever did we do before affordable digital cameras?).

What will encourage me to enter these contests is not the (remote) possibility that my entry might win but the hope that I will get some feedback as to how I could have done better.

Graeme

I am pulling the "sticky" feature off this thread, and I am submitting the list of confirmed entries to the judge for this particular contest. For reference, the final list is the 3rd posting in this thread.

We received a lot of very nice entries in this contest. Good luck to everyone.

I was not able to create a project because I'm still working on backyard renovations - and staying focused on that until they are done.
