I have been turning for about ten years but have been more active in the past 2-3 years. Most of my turnings are hollow forms and I am interested in combing turning with power carving, pyrography and painting. I have done a few recently but am in the early stages of learning techniques. I do have a limited amount of experience carving burning and painting life size decoys which I am using this experience in applications to turning. Here is an example of a recent project combining some of the above.

Welcome aboard, David. Those are a couple beautiful pieces. I'm intrigued by the rings around Planet Walnut?? which have no visible means of support. :D I love the chatoyance in the second one.
The planet is from polo del chino wood and is hollow whereas the rings and base are from madrone. I salvaged three of my wife’s broken sewing machine needles to attach the rings and once in lace used a drop of ca glue. This did not start out to be a planet but after taking off some wood and seeing the swirls in the grain that’s what I saw. Doing the rings with a skew and acrylics was just an adaptation I made up. Fun but a challenge
Yes, the chatoyance in second piece is lovely. It is big leaf maple. The form was inspired by John Jordan’s work. I intentionally wanted the sapwood to belt across the top. Carving the curved recesses was more difficult than I anticipated.

David, just wanted to say welcome to the forum. You obviously know your way around a lathe (groan... I just realized how bad an unintended pun that is). Nevertheless, I have to say that your work is beautiful. I'm sure that learning this forum will be a snap for you. But if you have any questions, you need only to ask. Lots of us are happy to help. Not all of us CAN help, but we're happy to offer it. :D

Thanks Mark. I just finished a piece that I have a question re finishing. It is a hollow form with power carving, texturing, pyrography and acrylic paint. I am not sure if I need to put a finish over the acrylic for protection. Your thoughts?

I have put finish over acrylic that I've done but mainly to give a gloss to it.

If it is artist's acrylic like a Liquitex I would consider it for UV protection and harden it a bit.

Polycrylic like minwax or an artist type varnish or seal coat. Spray shellac is also something that I've used.

Thanks Mark. Very helpful. I am looking for a satin finish. The UV protection makes sense to me.

David, try Krylon Matte Spray finish. It will provide protection and if light coats are applied you won't even know it is there. If you want a little more shine I believe they have that as well....but I don't know the actual name of that product
