Hello, I am a new member to the forum and this is my first post. My name is Lewis Elliott and I would like to introduce myself to the forum members. I am a retired Aerospace Engineer who worked in the industry for about 45 years. I retired 10 years ago at my full retirement age. I have been married for 56 years and my wife and I have two adult children; we reside in New Jersey. One of my hobbies is woodworking: I am a hybrid woodworker blending hand tools and power tools and now integrating turning into the mix. Although I have dabbled in woodworking for many years I consider myself a beginner who is interested in expanding my skill set. I have a full size lathe and have a little experience with carbide turning tools; however my desire is the become familiar with the safety and use of traditional turning tools. I also like to write simple "C" programs that can assist me at the tool or workbench; some of which I can execute on my apple iWatch. As time goes on, I will have many questions for the forum members. To get started in turning I have acquired a full size lathe, as mentioned above, the Oneway Stronghold chuck system, bowl and spindle gouges, a grinder and Oneway Wolverine sharpening jig equipment for sharpening my turning tools. I will shortly be setting up my sharpening station and my lathe. I also have purchased some of the "Beall Tools" equipment. My current turning goal is to make bowls and vessels for gifts and spindle items to supplement my woodworking projects.

Well welcome aboard, you seem well-prepared as an engineer should/ or would be. Here we have an eclectic mix of personalities from all over, you should fit in well. One of the most endearing aspects of the wood turning fraternity is the freedom of knowledge and experience, all based on the idea of paying it forward, greetings from Australia. :)

Thanks. I recently joined the DelVal Turners group here in Southern NJ. The first in person meeting is next month. I'm looking forward to it. I took a short turning course at the local Rockler's but it only featured carbide tools. So far they have not offered a traditional tools coarse.

Welcome. I'll second the motion to join your local woodturning club. I belong to 4 clubs and they have been uniformly welcoming and helpful. Many clubs have mentor programs that you can use to get you through rough spots.

My other suggestion is finding a week long course for beginning turners with one of the professional turning instructors. Stuart Batty, Jimmy Clews, Beth Ireland there are many others. You are almost certain to learn an enormous amount and spare yourself some of the agony of clawing up the learning cliff alone. I find You Tube videos to be uneven in quality with some frightening.

Best of luck and safe turning.

At the top of this thread, my last name is incorrectly spelled, and I don't know how to correct it. It is correct in my profile but not at the top of this thread in "bold"; my last name is spelled "Elliott", not Elliiot as incorrectly spelled in bold above. Does anyone know how to get this corrected?

You'd have to ask a forum moderator, though I wouldn't get my hopes up.. Looks like a fat-finger typo as it would be the title of the thread that you entered when you first posted it. I wouldn't worry too much about it.. Though it would probably bother some OCD types..
