Pardon me if I'm missing this, but where can I see the most recently added photos of other members?

I believe this feature is likely to get the most comments from others, and I'm sure I'm not alone in wanting to hear what others have to say about my entries, as well as recent entries from other turners.

This feature usually popped up when logging into the forums before the recent software changes, but all I see is random photos that have no real relationship to when they were posted. I would like to see BOTH random photos, and most recently added photos to the galleries........

thanks, ooc

Charlie, gives you some options, but from what I read in the first sticky on this forum, it appears that the volunteers who keep the forum going decided to make a change to the opening forum page so that it now shows random images from the approximately 11,000 gallery images. If you read through the posts in that thread, you can get a better idea, I think of why they changed it. I believe there was at least one post from someone saying essentially the same preference that you have. I also feel the same way that you do about it, but I believe that there aren't any current plans to change it back.

My perspective is that the default view for that page would better serve the interests of forum users if images of new work were afforded at least a little time in the limelight before being relegated to obscurity. I suppose that an argument for randomly displaying images could be made around the idea that images aren't forever lost and forgotten. However, from the perspective of seeing what is currently being done by active members of the forum, things have certainly been made more cumbersome. And, from a statistical point of view given the number of images stored on the server and the rate that new images are being added, the probability of any one particular image showing up is so small that for practical purposes is almost zero.

The software used is designed to be somewhat generic to meet the needs of a wide variety user communities so there are choices of views to show Random, Most Popular, or Most
Recent images. For this community, my opinion is that having a default that shows the Most Recent View would serve our purposes better than the Random View.

Who knows, we may be the only ones who prefer the old view that showed two rows of images that were the most recent work done by members. The way to get change is to make your views known to the folks in charge by PM or email or phone call or snail mail.

BTW, I don't think that we can have BOTH views on the main forum page, but you can get to a page that provides that by following Charlie's instructions.

I don't know if it's that I'm getting old and change is not as easy as it use to be or what, but I also liked being able to view the current photo's of turnings so that we can respond to what we see.

There's my 2 cents.

default view

I have changed the default view to most recent, the main forum will show the most recent four, to see more click on the gallery link.

Have left the view on the main page to limit to the display to the most recent four, it keeps the page cleaner, one extra click to see the most recent 16 isn't going to kill anyone ;)

Any issues with the change , please post in the sticky post above regarding forum issues.

Your comment reminded me of one other thought. It has been a common practice by many members on this forum to comment on recently posted images. By changing the default view to random and making recent work less prominent, the change can only have a negative impact on that activity. Also, I can't imagine that there will be much if any commenting on images that are several years old and in many cases the person who posted the image has been inactive for years.

Many thanks, I'm a happy camper. Is there any way in the new software for the name of the turner to be shown?

Hello John.......thanks!

I was reading your posts in the "sticky" while you did this. Most of all that thread doesn't interest me, because I'm not very computer aware.......so, it's a thread that I didn't pay much attention to.

Would be willing to bet the most recent photos are what the majority of users want to see.....but, that's just my guess.

You got the reins and can change as you want, so just......thanks for listening to other opinions! :D

I added an entry to my gallery last evening, and I feel like a "road hog"!

Normally, I shoot four photos of all my bowls.....3/4 view, profile view, foot view, and one from above, with some variation according to individual character.

This uses the entire space for the mini-gallery of newly listed photos. Hopefully some others will be inspired to post their own photos and push me off the spotlight.

I did receive one comment almost immediately, and having this new mini-gallery is likely to mean more overall participation in the expanded new listings gallery.....or, I think that it will. If it does, it will mean good things for overall forum participation, as well.

Question: With the old format, we were allowed a total of four gallery photos daily. Is this limitation the same?

Also, is there some way to check the allowable photo space being used against what is allowed? Is this limitation the same as it used to be, as well? I got into trouble several times by my photos exceeding the limits of what is allowed in my gallery.....My solution was to limit myself to less than about 120 photos, and delete every time I add new photos. This seems to work for someone like me, who isn't very computer technically inclined.......or, maybe I just reject having anything to do with putting effort into the technical aspects of computers! (That's the more likely!)

Odie, I think most of that information is available when you click the "Upload Photo" menu link.

I found a compromise setting I think we can live with.

I changed the displayed rows to two, rather than the one, the one click to the gallery page will still take a member to the last 16 posted, same as now.

Decent amount of new pic to display without all the scrolling of the full block.

The road is yours. :)

I haven't noticed that feature, but it sounds like a great idea. I know that most photo sharing sites tell you how much of your allowed space is being used ... just in case you might want to buy more. ;)

OK, I see where it is now....thanks James.

I see the allowable space has been increased from where it once was.....and, for me, the max was around 130 pictures, but varied as to how big the pictures were. I settled on around 115-120 as my max for my gallery, so as to avoid being rejected. Also, there was some limitations on how many photos you could submit per day, and I believe it was four or five. Since I always take at least four multiple views of my bowls, it meant one bowl per day......don't know, but that may have changed, as well!

I've got about 30 bowls to photograph, and I do my photography at a snail's pace.......so, this could take me awhile! :(

It hit around -15° below zero this week at our home.......so, this is a good time to do some camera work.

Sounds a mite chilly there. I thought that we had it cold here -- temps in the twenties and thirties for the past week or so. This is very cold for us. Last winter, I am not sure that we had more than a couple days below freezing all winter. I also did a little photography since I couldn't roll my lathe outdoors -- or didn't want to.

Post as many views as you like, Odie. Personally, there are few pieces that I want to see more than two pictures posted.

Thank you, John. As the others have said, I like this method better.

Dean, thanks for the critique on my spalted Rock Maple bowl. I left a comment for you there. I don't mind if others critique my work at all, but I do reserve the right to agree, or disagree. I'll probably say so, either way! :D

Thanks, Mike.......You just said what I've been thinking for a long time. Usually everyone only submits one or two photos, but I like to see the whole thing! Sometimes it takes four or five photos to do that.

I'll add my Amen to what Mike says. My viewpoint is that I want my turning to be seen in as much the same manner as someone might see it if walking past a display of pieces sitting on a shelf and is giving each a quick once over. The thing that I try to do when photographing a piece is to convey a sense of depth and shape by controlling the lighting and shadows. I don't want it to appear as a forensic documentation of the piece as I think that a lot of information is lost when trying to present something akin to a set of orthographic or mug shot views. I understand that a single shot doesn't show every possible detail. but when I see something that someone else created, I am not seeing things the same way that they see it anyway. The person who made the piece has invested a lot of time and energy into bringing the piece into its final form. If I were a buyer, I would want to see how it might appear sitting on a table as I walk into the room. If that one single first impression doesn't do the trick then I certainly am not interested in looking at more shots of the same piece.
