Carved Maple Hollow Form

Carved Maple Hollow Form

This piece was fourth in the series of hollow forms turned from the Vermont Maple log as I posted last year. Still have two more hollow forms ready and waiting for what to add as far as carving and/or texture. This piece was carved in tribute to John Jordan from whom I took a class. I doodled on paper to decide what to carve and came up with the double spiral fluting using his technique. It looked good on paper but I was dubious how it might turn out. I hopefully have not embarrassed him too much. This Maple log had a lot of spalting and some checking, but held together quite well for the carving and finishing. The piece measures 6 x 6 and was finished with several coats of Krylon matt lacquer and hand polished with paper towel.
Thanks Michelle for your liking this piece. It was fun to do and I am happy with the end result. I had a few doubts along the way but perseverence prevailed. Thanks again.

very nice design and finish. When hand polishing with paper towel, do you rub it when still wet or dry? I have never heard of this process and have to say the finish is awesome. Tks for the reply.

Gary, It was there. Did you see it? You and I were so busy with other things at swat, we may have missed some of them. Was good to see you there again.

Alfred, I was told that a paper towel of the right weight will be about the same as 1500 - 2000 sandpaper. So,just think of the paper towel as that grit and polish the finish after it has dried. It doe's work. Do not do it wet.
