• We just finished a major forum upgrade. Please check out the "Whats New and Help" Thread at https://aawforum.org/community/index.php?threads/forum-upgrade-whats-new-and-help-march-2021.17436/ If you are having problems using the forums, please clear your browser cache and that should clear up any issues. Otherwise post in the Help Thread or email us at forum_moderator@aawforum.org. Hope you enjoy the refreshed site!
  • 3/30/21 - We finished what was hopefully the last part of the forum upgrade we started earlier this month, the rebuilding of all of the permissions. In our testing everything seems to be working correctly but if you have any problems please post in the "Forum Technical Support" forum and we will take a look at it. You will also see a few changes with the main forum index. We have moved the AAW Member Forums to their own group and the Marketplace Forums to their own group. This simplified the permissions configuration for the forums and hopefully it will make the forums a little easier to naviagate. Thanks!

Hi folks,

An update to this earlier post – the forums will be undergoing some upgrades tonight starting at 10 pm EST and lasting approximately 1-2 hours.

Afterwards, there will be a period of 24-72 hours when a certain subset of users (all depends on geography) might not be able to reach the forums. This will pass and some of you might not even experience it.

Nothing different needs to be done on your end. Your passwords and logins are the same and are not changing.

If there is a glitch or gotcha that crops up other than the aforementioned 24-72 period, please let myself or John Van Domelen know and we'll get right on it.

If you have any questions, please post here in this thread and we'll do our best to answer them.

Many thanks for your patience, understanding and being a part of the AAW.

Best,

Michael Seufer

Check the posting dates -- I suspect that is because he posted that many photos in one day and swamped the gallery page.

Yes I got it. The thing is that the forum has been down for one day and I saw those photos since it came back thus the thought that something could have been wrong! Beautiful work by Dean any way.

Well I'm certainly glad to hear that the reason you saw just those photos is because there were so many wonderful pieces to look at and not because of any errors! :D

Please let me know if there is anything else in the forums that might need our attention and John and I will do our very best to remedy accordingly.

Best,

Michael

Michael,

One of the forum rules limits the number of images that a member may post in the gallery to two per day. A numbers of members ignore the rule which I presume adds extra work for the mods to delete them. Is there any way to hard wire a limit in the software? I understand that the software for displaying the gallery images is separate from vBulletin, but is it integrated into vBulletin or completely separate?

Yes, this was also one of the reasons why I thought it was a problem in the forum since I never saw more that two pictures at the time!

I think that some members are not aware that there is a two per day limit and don't intentionally ignore the limit. Perhaps in the upload instructions it could be stated that there is a daily limit in the members gallery.

There is an announcement in the forum header to that effect. The sticky posts also state that. I don't know if the forum rules have been updated, but 21 images says that the rules are being completely ignored.

Numerous over limit posts deleted....

Ok folks, no way round it, that was a PITA to have to deal with.

Apparently having the rules plastered in three different places is not enough, and/or no one bothers to read the FAQ or sticky posts before diving in...

Likely will end up forcing posts to moderation/approval before display... to be honest, I anticipate it to be less work than what I just had to deal with.

Just one point. Since the majority of the two daily pictures are of the same bowl or object, why not to allow two pictures in the same post?

The two image limit applies to the photo gallery and not forum posts. Additionally, each image can be a collage of different views if so desired. Also, the photo gallery images are meant only to display completed turnings whereas images in forum posts can be anything that is relevant to the thread.

Michael, just checking in to let you know I still have access issues. Full site availability via iPad on current iOS and iPhone on iOS 5x or whatever. Older version.

On my office PC at work this morning still seeing the site availability redirect page. There I'm running win7 with current updates, patches blah blah.

I use chrome by preference but tried Firefox and IE - both current builds. Cleared cache, cookies, history, temp files and deleted all passwords for the forum site. Same result.

It's not a firewall issue - had full access pre-upgrade and we've made no changes to our small company network I help administer. We have a dedicated IP through our ISP but I don't recall it at the moment.

Our providers DNS info (Dont know if you need it).

Primary 68.153.37.20
Secondary 68.153.37.21

I'm on 3G at the moment with my iPad, posting this with full site access. If I enable wifi I don't see the site (I use our company network for wifi access). I'm at a loss but can't think of anything else to do.

For what it's worth, I'm in south louisiana which may or may not matter but I see that so e access was location dependent. Anyway thanks for any help you can offer.

More info. Jumped on son in laws wifi using comcast and it's working.

small issue

When the major site revision occurred, I found I had difficulty getting to the forum after logging in. I sometimes would get an 'invalid redirect' message after log in. (Invalid Redirect URL (http://aawforum.org/vbforum/?) Now I get it every time. I am able to access the forum by clicking on the forum tab at the top of the page, so it's not a crisis. I use Windows 7 and firefox v28.0 on a fairly recent Dell desktop.

I also find it mildly annoying that when I click on "AAW Forum" on the welcome page, I am taken to an intermediary page and have to click on "Go to Forum" again to actually get there. I'm not sure what the purpose of this second step is, but assume somebody has one in mind.

Initially things worked smoothly before the strange cumbersome path was implemented. To add insult to injury, when you finally get to the forum main page, you are prompted to log in ..... Whereupon you get an error message. The best workaround this mess is to simply bypass the woodturner.org main site altogether and go straight to the forums. Just bookmark the main forum and put the bookmark in the bookmarks toolbar. After that it is just one click instead of four.

Michael,

Is there a recommended iPad App to use with the forum.

I have been using "forum runner" which was recommended along time ago.

It doesn't 'to seem to recognize imbedded PDF attachments and the editor always gives an error but if I quite the app
The changes are in fact made.

In any event this app may not have kept pace and just maybe you are recommending one to use.

Appreciate you work!

Thanks,
Al

Hi Folks --

A few things:

Photo Gallery software has been updated. Please let myself or John know if you are having any issues with it.

I am working on the feature of limiting photo uploads to a specific number per 24 hours.

Bookmarking the Forums: Your AAW Forum bookmark should be http://www.aawforum.org

Nothing else. If your AAW Forum bookmark is anything else, you are just inviting current or future problems.

Also, the main Woodturner.com web site and this one are two completely different web sites and on different servers. The main Woodturner website merely directs you to this one. You do not need to access the main Woodturner site to get to or use these forums.

Hope that helps,

Michael Seufer

Mark, I have the same issue. There are several forums here only available to me when I'm using the mobile app.

Mark, have you tried using ping or tracert from a command prompt? If you get a response then you could try entering the IP address rather than URL in your web browser. With tracert you ought to be able to determine where the problem is occurring. Also, triple check your spelling. We all develop a blind spot when proofing our own typing. Also, ISPs have been known to firewall URLs that they think are unsafe.

Good ideas Bill. I'll run a traceroute and see what happens. Our ISP is basically just providing bandwidth. We host our own site and servers with a fixed IP. But it us indeed a possibility. Thanks!

I suppose some things have changed over the years. Once upon a time, I could enter the IP address rather than the URL and the browser would take me to the site. Now, it only works for some sites and it doesn't work for the AAW forum. However, you can run a trace route to see if you eventually get there. Maybe things time out or hang somewhere along the way. I have three PC's running XP and 7 as well as an e-reader, iPad, and two iPhones. I can get to the forums with any of them. It is possible for forums to block certain domains if they have had problems with spam or hacking.

Michael,

I noticed some odd things happening in my post count in the last few weeks. When my post count got to about 4000, it jumped down to around 3950 and then as it got close to 4000 again, it appears that the post count returned to showing the correct number. Now, I'm wondering if I got caught in a warp in the space-time continuum or if there was something else going on?

Hi Bill,

Let me know if you see this issue happen again. I will continue to monitor the situation.

Additionally, if anyone else is having this issue, please let me know so I can take care of it.

Thanks,

M.

I can hit the site with a traceroute and when I ping it. Pinging shows no dropped packets. Tracert shows some significant delays hopping but brings the AAW IP.

Just for the heck of it I plugged the IP into my browser and got a 404 page. Things indeed have changed. Back in the early 90s I remember the old Netscape 1.1 and mosaic too. All dial up and gray pages until Netscape started extending HTML.

I'm going to ask our IT guy to contact our ISP but it seems that the fact I'm getting a page redirect on the AAW site means I'm there and it's a setting issue on that end.

"But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong". Dennis miller. :D

Michael and Bill,
When I type the AAWforum.org URL into Firefox, it takes me to aawforum.org/vbforum, and when I log in, I still get the redirect error. This isn't the most pressing issue facing mankind, but it's apparently not working as intended for me. Also, when logging in and I enter the first letter of my name, it fills in from memory, but the password doesn't fill in. When I click in the password box, the password appears and I can log in. This isn't a problem, but it's more atypical behavior, in my experience.

You may have missed the earlier post regarding that. Just ignore the message about logging in. Instead, select the forum that you want to go to and when your browser opens that page you should see that you are already logged in -- unless you intentionally log off when you leave this site.
