I Know it's been discussed before, But my friend ask me to make one for him.

I’m looking for a nice design, maybe with stack pieces, but I don’t have any clue on design.

Can someone help me to make a nice Urn, He don’t know how much he still have, maybe moths or not, who knows.

Thanks if you can help me

Funeral Urn roughed.JPG
Normand, I don't know if this helps or not, but the picture above is of a funeral urn I'm making. It's shown after being roughed and coated with sealant to allow it to dry before final turning. It is an end grain turned hollow vessel made of Bradford Pear. It is made of one piece but could be made with stacked and glued rings as well. I plan to turn a top from some Black Walnut. The top will not be fancy (no finial) and will be sealed with silicon after the ashes are placed inside. My research shows that we need one cubic inch of internal volume for every pound of healthy body weight. So, for a person in good health, weighing 200 lbs, the vessel would have to have at least 200 cubic inches of internal volume. To calculate the volume for the vessel shown is beyond my math skills so I have done the calculations for cylinders and spheres and am trying to hit something in between. If it helps, I can send you some figures. Or you can go here for info on sizing: https://www.stardust-memorials.com/about-urn-sizes.html. Also, here's an example of one of several posted on Etsy and it is segmented: https://www.etsy.com/listing/664547437/stunning-and-very-special-wooden-mango

Are you asking for "shape" design, or "how to make" design, or both? We don't know how much hollowing experience you have, so an urn might be quite an undertaking.
With stacked construction, and understanding that the interior doesn't really need the finish the out side does, it is certainly doable. I have made an urn, and even wearing proper PPE, dust somehow kept getting in my eyes and I would tear up and have to walk away, still, I would do it again...

Normand here is another example of an urn done for an acquaintance. It has a finial and threaded opening.

Thanks for your reply, for the shape, i can say I'm good, it more about design, John I like your model, I got the choice of wood species, Black Walnot, Black Ash, Box Elder, Amarante, Padoux and some more, So I have a nice wood choice.
My friend want to turn it by himself, but he don't have what he need to turn the inside, I'm good about that, and he's not sure if he got time to do it, So he ask for me help.
Thanks for your advice.

If your going to make it in a solid piece of wood you could turn it in 2 pieces. I did an online demo on making hollow forms this way and either hide the seam with powdered metal, turquoise or a wood ring in a contrasting color. Once you rough shape the outside and split the hollow form its like turning 2 deep end grain bowls to hollow it out.
