I have been curious for a while about Terry Scott's Manta Ray series of work. Looking thru his large website, I noticed he has the Manta Ray DVD for sale. I have ordered a few things from Terry. He ships worldwide, and the delivery time, even during this Covid era, is fast. I went ahead and ordered the Manta Ray and The Midas series.
Other than Terry, I see only Michael Alguire giving the Manta Ray a try.
The instructional video was professionally filmed and edited. Nice to see something like this, so tired of people making videos with a shaky handheld phone. Terry not only teaches how to turn his Manta-Ray, but there are countless other woodturning tips. I thoroughly enjoyed the video, especially because there is quite a bit of humor in it. I'm going to give the Manta-Ray a try. My biggest challenge will be to cut a block squared; I guess I will tune up my bandsaw, LOL.
Before I go for it, a practice run with the skew is in order. The Manta Ray vessel has that wow factor; how in the world did you do that? Also, there are so many possibilities that you can put your spin to it, make it your work, based on Terry's teachings. Thank you, Terry, for a great instructional video. I would like to hear from those that have turned a Manta Ray vessel. What was the hardest part? Any tips?

I reviewed Terry's Manta Ray DVD for Woodturning Design Magazine many tears ago. Terry has a second DVD that I reviewed and I believe the guy who filmed them would not give Terry the video of the third DVD.

I made hand mirrors in the manta ray style close to 20 years ago. Long before I ever knew Terry. I had been making square mirrors for a while and was bicycling one day and happen to see a rusting square road sign laying in a ditch with one corner bent. It immediately hit me how I could do that so I went home and made one. Then I decided I could do two corners down and two up. I did that and said wow that looks like a manta ray so I made a mirror that looked like that and the tail was the handle. I quit making those because the handle went into side grain and that was too weak.

Had my first "meeting" (virtual) with the West Michigan Wood Turners this past Saturday, and Phil Rose did the demo. Definitely was a great introduction to a local club!! Looking forward to trying a wavy bowl--though with my 12" Rikon, the first one may not be offset!! I've had an old dental drill in the garage for a long time, same demo will have me digging that out soon as well.

He gives a very professional demo. I've watched several of his. Great equipment and well planned out.

Was Phil doing a demo like the manta ray bowl? Wavy bowl sounds like another good name for it, and you would not have to say you are doing Terry Scotts bowl...

Very interesting look.

Carl Jacobson did a video on something similar to this about 5 years ago:

I have to agree with Terry, he says that making the lip of the bowl high, like the picture here, makes the top too "top-heavy" I will make mine lower like Terry's. There are so many variations and embellishments options that the possibilities are endless.

I was talking to Mike Hunter yesterday, we were saying I should try to do the skew part with one or more than one of his tools. What do you think John?

Do you remember how funny Terry is? Made me laugh several times. probably my favorite joke is saying that a square bowl, the ones beginners make, look like what some people keep under the bed to pee at night!! Growing up on a ranch, in winter, I had one steel pot just for that! Bathroom was too far....

I'd say it was more like ripples--all 4 corners turned down, with the bowl offset from center. Kind of a pebble in a pond look--which he then textured.

edit--tried to quote Emiliano's question on Phil Rose's demo and failed, i'll get that figured out!!
