This is just a reminder about the image posting rules for the gallery since it has been dormant for five months. The image gallery is strictly for displaying your completed turnings. The images must be of your own work. Any other photos posted in in the gallery will be deleted. Any other image that you wish to use in a message posted in the forum can be either uploaded directly to the forum from your computer or embedded if the image is one that you have on an online photo hosting site. Our photo gallery is not the proper place for storing images that are of any subject other than your completed turnings. The reason for our image gallery rules is that online storage is expensive. Our gallery currently contains over 10,000 images. Each forum member is allowed up to ten megabytes of storage in the gallery and if you are an AAW member that limit is increased to 25 megabytes. We're not trying to be meanies, it's just that we have fiscal constraints as well as not cluttering up the gallery with photos that are not completed turnings.

Bill,

It's been quite a while since I posted in the gallery and I've searched but can't find the answer (and I'm sure that's a user issue :):

What is the daily photo upload max? Also, is there an image resolution max? Thanks!

Mark

I was just about to update my post to give that information. The answer is that 1920 X 1920 pixels is the maximum pixel dimensions. The maximum file size is 1 MB. Personally, I think that a height of about 1280 pixels is plenty for most turnings. My screen is bigger than average, but it is best to limit the size of an image to what fits on an average screen. I believe that XenForo resizes images in the gallery to fit the browser window except in lightbox mode it might possibly display full size images but I'm not certain about that.i think that doing PIP (picture in picture) is a good option for showing a close-up detail. There is a limit of four images per day, but I don't think that XenForo has the capability to automatically enforce that rule. We might consider temporarily removing the four images per day rule so that members can restore missing images.

Hey Bill, Steve:

Thanks for that. 12 80 x 12 80 is a pretty generous image size and I tend to upload smaller images of that.

The real limiting factors are file size and image quality. If your choices are between high image quality, physically large image size (up to 1920 X 1920), and file size less than the limit of 1 or 2 MB: You can have two of those three, but you are likely to have a heck of a time meeting all three requirements. Nobody likes to scroll around to see the whole image. It's too much like watching a baseball game through a knothole in the outfield fence.

Bill, my former gallery was one of those lost recently and I would like to re-post it. However, I am a bit confused as to how to proceed. Reference is made made to member galleries (plural) but I find no way to start a new gallery. I also find reference to albums and a way to start a new album. Are the terms "gallery" and "albums" synonimous?

Most people post in the Member Gallery, but you can see your images by selecting Your Content > Your Media.

You can also create albums if you want to organize your pieces into groups.

Either way, the images will be viewable in the most recent list.

You also can create albums later and then move images into or out of your albums.

I am still confused. Are there separate galleries available for each member, or is there just one big pot into which you toss your images. The albums seem to a method of organizing your images by type. Does a member's albums get collected into a member's own gallery or just swim in the big pot? A cogent how-to posting would not be amiss here.

You can create your own album or several albums if you wish. The images that you see when you select the gallery tab is comprised of all media. Even if you don't create an album, your images are still identified as yours so that you can browse through your images. Creating albums offer some advantages such as the ability to arrange the order they are displayed and the ability to use the lightbox mode to scroll through your images. The best way to understand how it works is to just jump in and do it. You have the ability to reorganize to your hearts content. You can move images from member galleries to albums or vice versa.

I wasn't aware that the forum is open to non members... I took it for granted it was just just for the AAW... I personally like this new forum software better than the old one. Good job.

It is open to all woodturners, but one of the perks of being an AAW member is more storage space in the gallery. Non members are allowed 10 MB while AAW members are allowed 25 MB. The extra storage isn't automatic so if you haven't already done so, send a private message or email to Steve Worcester and tell him me and tell me your member ID number. The reason that it's not an automatic process is because of data security.

Thanks for the compliment on the new forum. It took several months to find and evaluate forum software and after selecting XenForo customizing it to fit our requirements. We were very pleased with the final results.

Here is a small change when posting images in the gallery.. We have tried to encourage people to give some sort of title to their work even if it is something pedestrian like "Maple Bowl". If a title isn't entered then the file name became the title and that generally meant that it was the name that the camera assigned ... Something like IMG_1234.JPG ... not the least bit useful. It is also helpful to the viewer if a description is also entered. Since this request is frequently ignored, it is now mandatory that an image title be manually entered. Otherwise the software will not allow the image to be uploaded.
