I think these are excellent examples of this type of project. Thank you for sharing. Your comment about "offset turned on the lathe" confused me.
The procedure I am familiar with for turning scoops such yours is:
Prep blanks with a paper glue joint between the halves
Turn the outside shape between centers
Carefully split the two halves along the paper glue joint
Mount the scoop in a scroll chuck to turn out the hollow of the scoop, mostly I see scoop specific jaws are used, but I have seen examples of using 3 tower jaws to hold the scoop for hollowing (missing jaw to accommodate the handle)
Sand and finish
Is this similar to the procedure you used? Thanks again!
My blank is 2" wide x 1" thick x 5-1/2" long. My block is clamped in 2 jaws of a 50mm set and then. The inside is turned with a RN scraper. FYI - the flat surface of the 2" plane is the become the top flat surface of the scoop. The offset turning come from turning the blank between centers, with the center line being 1/8" down from the top surface of the blank.
Hard to explain but a very easy process. The process I developed in determining center line is critical, but my way is easy.
Start to finish takes me a little over 1-hour.
I'm going to be doing a couple demo's on these and have written instructions if your interested.
Yes, I would like to know more about your procedure. Perhaps posting your instructions to the Projects forum would increase the visibility of your procedure.
