2065 Spalted Hackberry.

2065 Spalted Hackberry.

Original block of wood metered 26% MC, and after roughing and anchorseal, it took a total of 8 months to stabilize. 5 1/8" x 3 5/8", 7.9 oz, sanded to 600gt, Danish Oil Natural, Beall 3-step buffed. My failure rate for spalted woods is the highest among those woods I use. I'm a sucker for photos of great looking specimens, but it's difficult to judge the amount of spalting from photos. Inspect the endgrain carefully....that's where you can see tearout from the saw, and make your judgement from there. This one turned out well, but I have plenty of spalted failures in the trashcan!
Wow! Spalting overload on this one! Did you have to use any type of wood hardener or finish while cutting?

Oh, sorry for not answering your question, Tom.....

No, I didn't use any wood hardeners. This one was harvested at the perfect time. I've tossed out many spalted woods in the past.....just too soft to get a clean cut. I can remember using a hardener sometime in the past, and decided against doing that in the future. If I can't get a good clean cut, then it's not worth the effort to try and save it.
