African Black wood capsule box with a desert iron wood inset.

I was gifted a large block of Blackwood from a friend in our woodturning group, he was gifted the block about 40 years ago... his health hasn't been great and he's not turning anymore... I gave him this box in return.
hi
i got 2 african blackwood blocks in a cutoff box. how was ur experance turning this wood? did it turn ok? carbide cutters or HHS? i read somewhere that this wood being so hard it was best turned on a metal lathe
so they have been sitting on a shelf
thanks Neb

Black wood is quite hard but you don’t need carbide. I only use traditional tools and most of them are HSS. It helps when you know the grain direction and try as much as possible to make cuts through side grain. I have a couple of reels on my Instagram page Broken Bow Studio, showing me hollowing a box and it’s fairly easy to plunge a gouge into it. Hope that makes sense.
