Bastao Bowl

This 6-1/2-inch diameter bowl was turned from Bastao, a Brazilian hardwood. The word 'bastao' means walking stick in Portuguese. The Bastao log looks like a loose gathering of walking sticks somehow joined together in the middle, hence the name. The wood provides a variety of dramatic wood colors and textures. Finish is Watco oil buffed on the Beall system. Take a look at the first comment to see an image of the log with a section cut out to make this platter

Here's an image of the Bastao log. It really does look like someone gathered together a bunch of walking sticks.

Are they relatively round? I bet that would make a really interesting end grain - sort of NE - bowl !!! But only for experienced turners. :eek:

Tom, the slices are somewhat round but very irregular. The end grain is downright exciting! Here is one end-grain slab that I 'dished out' to give it a bowl-like surface. Once I figured out how to mount the slab securely, the turning was straightforward.
