I started as a winged seed that found fertile ground. From seedling to sapling to tree I grew. I provided shade, habitats and homes for animals, birds and insects. The ants did me in. Their hunger for my sweet sap led them to bore into me, finally hollowing out my trunk. This also led to the growth of fungi. Now, Im being transformed into bowls and all my history is on display.
Red maple, Acer Rubrum, is a good hard wood colored with reddish and bluish gray, that in this case is further accented with cracking, spalting and fungal lines. 13" x 5" Finished with a mixture of polyurethane, tung oil and turpentine.
