"A Straight Bowl that will throw you a Curve"
9 3/4" Diam X 5 1/4" High
Andiroba & Maple
14 Segments/ring with radial grain-an attempt to verify Jeff's contention that bowls can have straight sides & still look good
I hesitated to reply because I can't give a brief response - but here goes.
In segmented turning every step depends on the last-in this bowl there were 5 (if you count turning, sanding & finishing as one).
1.Cutting-14 pie shaped segments (7 lrg. 7 small)
with curved sides vs straight(curves are cut cross grain)
2.Glueing-all these into a flat circular shape about 11" in diam (a lot of fun!)
3.Cutting-this flat circle into 7 rings with tapered sides that when stacked up form a bowl
4.Glueing-these rings together keeping the bowl centered and the curves aligned (again a lot of fun)
5.Turning, sanding , finishing etc.
The result is a bowl with radial grain & continuous smooth curves in the design.
