Karaka tree is endemic to New Zealand, look it up on the computer Wikipedia has a full wright up on it under Kararka Tree.
Yes it is a beautiful rich red coloured wood quite hard and turns well.

I use Teak Oil on all my turning as it's food safe when dry, as you don't know what people are going to use things for. Sanded to 600 grit, this tray would have had at least 8 to 10 coats of Teak Oil with a light rub with (0000) steel wool between coats when dry.
