Actually I used black lacquer rattle can and white Japan color (oil based paint, latex paint can be used) rubbed into the grain and wiped off when almost dry against the grain with a rough cloth like burlap. If this was put in service I would use black stain first As the lacquer may scratch off exposing the wood. The white must be a different base as the black otherwise it would dissolve the lacquer. Liming wax will not give you such a strong contrast. An colors can be used but black and white shows up better.
